canon 550d (t2i) HSS timing off

edited September 2016 in V6 II Compatibility
i've been testing (2) V6ii's via multi-master to wirelessly trigger an rf60...(1) on a fuji xpro1 and (1) on a canon 550d.  the xpro1 works well in forced HSS mode.  the canon triggers, but does not illuminate the frame evenly at equivalent speeds (bright band at bottom of frame.)  the 550d has this issue when the xpro1+V6ii are powered off as well, so doubtful that multi-master is related...seems to be a sync issue with the 550d, and there's no way to manually profile it with the rf60 (option disappears when canon is detected, and manual camera select always disables HSS.)

am i missing an option or combination of buttons somewhere?  imagine my loss of sanity having started off testing with a fuji xe2 (my main shooter) alongside the 550d...which are not bleeding edge, however the xe2 currently rank as flickr's number 1 fujifilm camera under activity factor, while the 600d and 550d have activity factors ranking number 1 and 6 respectively for canon...meaning these are still of the most used models today.

Do you mean manually selecting the camera system?
Or selecting a flash profile for the RF60?
I suppose you are referring to the former?

There are two selection options for Camera System.
    1. Auto-detect
    2. Manual selection
We recommend using auto-detect as that way you can be sure the V6 II has a good hot shoe connection with the camera. And to help V6 II to auto-detect the camera, half-press camera's shutter button as you switch on the V6 II to TX mode.

FYI Canon is one of the easier to detect - it does not goes to sleep as quick as some other manufacturers, such as Fujifilm.

Please let us know how do you start-up your setup and we can go from there.

    Thanks!

  • thanks for the response.  yes i am using auto detect flash and camera while simultaneously pressing shutter and starting up the V6ii; i do see the "c" camera icon indicating it has detected the 550d.  the flash is triggered at all shutter speeds, however does not illuminate the frame evenly at HSS speeds (there is a persistent bright band at bottom of frame.)  i can try to attach a photo later if it helps.

i have verified this to be the case when disabling multi-master, and tried to use canon's second shutter option but am disallowed at shutter speeds over 1/200s.  the latest canon firmware is running and no magic lantern is being used.

i only mention flash calibration because its selection was necessary to get fuji xpro1 HSS working properly and that option completely disappears when using canon...similarly, manually selecting devices seems to disable HSS completely.

  • Just chekcing, what firmware versions are you running on your V6 II and RF60?

    Here are the latest version:
    V6 II:  1.1.004
    RF60: 204

In the meantime I will pass this to R&D to check and will get back to you in a couple days.

I don't think we have a 550D in the studio... maybe we need to get one since you said it's one of the most popular models, on flickr at least.

Thank you for your understanding during this time.

  • yup latest firmwares installed, just verified 1.1.004 and 204.  i was also surprised to see 550d and 600d still ranking so highly on flickr...they were afterall the big splash magic lantern cameras so likely have had multiple lives one the used market.  my understanding is the two models are identical apart from the lcd displays...would be surprised if their HSS's are different.
