TTL pass through on X-T1 not working

  • That's manual flash mode on the V6, the EF-42 is set for TTL.
  • Hi,
I have one V5 and two V6 and I struggle to get any of them to work With my Fuji XT1 and my Pentax AF-360FGZ flash
Does not work either on TTL passtrough mode or Remote flash trigger.

When I use my older Fuji XPro1 it Works fine.
There is no hotshoe pin on the Xpro1 thats not included on the XT1.
    so any suggestion ?

  • Looks like latest Fuji firmware update for XT1 is the problem
  • Hello FlashSite1234

We have both Fuji X-T1 and Fuji EF-42 in hand to test with V6 on the top in TTL pass-through activated and using manual flash profile. The TTL function works as expected.

I would suggest to update the V6 with the latest firmware and try again. In case you already did, please use the factory reset in the V6 MENU to reset all the setting in the V6.

My another wild guess is your V6 was not mounted in position. Maybe you can check whether the V6 hotshoe is locked properly. Just make sure it is not loose.

I hope to find out the problem. Please let me know if you have any further comments.

    All the best.

When using the Fuji X-T1 with V6, please make sure the shooting mode in X-T1 is S (single shoot). The flash triggering will not work with CL or CH mode.

  • Ray Chan, for me this is clear. Otherwise the flash will also not work in TTL without the V6. But the V6 doens't work anyway.

    Kind regards,

    Torben
  • Hello torbo666,

I have tested the Nissin i40, Fuji X-T1 and V6 in TTL pass-though mode. The i40 was able to fire in TTL with that setup. No matter it is with or without V6. I uploaded a video to demonstrate the operation.

Sorry, I don't have a clue why your V6 didn't work in TTL pass-through. But, I'm hoping to narrow down the possible problems from the video.

    Hope that helps.

  • Ray Chan, looks good. Really strange. Could you do me a favour and tell which firmware of the X-T1 you have? I have the actual one, Version 03.00. Strange thing is that also other persons have the same problem as me. Maybe a setting in the X-T1 menu is the problem. Could you maybe make a second video while going thru the X-T1 menu to see what the problem could be? I will compare it later. I'm pretty sure that this is the problem. Also in the past I read problems with a specific setting in the menu...

    Regards,

    Torben
  • Is it possible the TTL function of the i40 ONLY works when the Fuji XT1 is in AUTO mode? If you select either f stop or shutter speed away from "A" does the TTL still work with the V6?

I see in the video your camera is in AUTO mode.
  • Hello @FlashSite1234, what firmware version are you running on your X-T1?

We are running V 3.00 on ours.

  • Antonio, but TTL also didn't work with the old firmware. My stuff is out for maintenance till end of next week, so i'm not able to test it. But i had the problem with the old and with new firmware. But i never tried it in Auto modes as shown in the video (as mentioned by flashsite1234).
  • @torbo666 it's likely because Mechanical Shutter is not selected.  Give that a try when your camera is back. Keep us posted!

  • @antonio OK, i will do. Does it also work with the settring MS + ES? Shutter speed is 1/180 with flash sync anyway, but we don't have to modify this setting then. With Ms+ES the electronic shutter will be activated above 1/4000 sec.

  • Hi All, esp Flashsite and any one else with a Fuji flash (not X8 - that is not compatible due to extra pin):

There is a little trick to getting the Fuji (in my case EF 20) flash to work on TTL - make sure the V6 unit clicks into place on the camera hotshoe, you need to push it in a little harder, and hear a little 'click; some times. If TTL is not working (and you have enabled "TTL mode" on the V6 Unit) - then just fiddle some more till the TTL works - after you get that 'click' to ensure V6 Unit has seated on the camera hot shoe properly.

Some images to show it works - set the Fuji EF20 dial on TTL - normal; -2 and + 2 exposure - beautiful - now I have Manual flash control with Off camera Cactus RF60's, and TTL front flash with quick exposure compensation  via Fuji flash on V6. And the OCF shoe-cord I have also passes through TTL if I need to have the Fuji flash Off camera.

  • Does it also work with the settring MS + ES? .

    @antonio, @raychan,
Yesterdday i received my X-T1 back from maintenance. The first thing i checked was the TTL pass through. I've checked it with all adjustments and it didn't worked - only a few seconds in between during testing the flash did some adjustments and surprise surprise, TTL passthrough worked. So i switched everything off, dismantled it from the cam and placed everything back on the camera to get it working second time. But it didn't worked... After two hours of thinking, i took my rasp and shortened the hotshoe of the V6 on the front. AND IT WORKS NOW EVERYTIME.
See attached pics, the short tooth on the front of your hotshoe is too much. I have three V6, i have the problem with all of them.
Before modifiying it, i also tried it with hardly pressing in, moving a bit out and so on... Without access. But now it works and i'm happy!!!

    Regards,

    Torben
  • Hello together, just read that there is a new hotshoe because of the Nikon D750 problem (which i also have). Was there also an improvement in the above described problem to the X-T1?
I really like the concept of the V6. Wbut i don't use them because always when i want to use them, there are problems as last weekend on the wedding where they didnt't worked with the D750 :-(
For the X-T1 i had to rasp the hotshoe of the V6 to get it working. When i send them now back for a hotshoe update for the Nikon D750 and get them back, i don't want to rasp them down again.

    Regards,

    Torben
  • @torbo666 you don't have to rasp the new one as it was modified to fit also with the Nikon D750 as well as other camera models.

But for the X-T1, TTL pass through has always works on our own X-T1 as long as the V6 is securely mounted on the camera.

    Thanks!

  • @Antonio,
i know, i had the conversation with raychan. But on mine it doesn't worked, only after rasping of the hotshoe flat steel on the V6 (i desrcibed my issue in th ethread). OK, so i will send them and hope it will be an improvement on both cameras.

Thank you! Nice to see that you are improving your products.

  • Thanks again, Torben.

  • I have the same problem. Just bought the Fuji EF-42 speedlight with two Cactus V6 trnascievers for my X-T1. I want to use the speedlight in LLT pass through for off-camera lighting. I've read all the threats here. Updated the firmware of the XT1, of the v6, even tried to make the v6 hotshoe fit better. Still no success.

What else can there be wrong? Any update on fixes since the last post above?

    Thanks
    Remco
  • I have the same problem.
Hello @Remco what problem did you encounter? Were your images overexposed?

We have the exact setup as yours, X-T1, EF-42, and V6 sandwiched in between, I enabled TTL pass through, and what I found out this time is that:
    • if I pull the V6 backward, despite I didn't see any noticable movement of the V6 actually moving back, but it's after that TTL signal is not passing up.
    • I test by adjusting the zoom on the lens and the zoom range numbers no longer change as I twist and turn the lens.
    • Once I push the V6 with a forward motion, the numbers change as a adjust the zoom on the lense.
On that note, I suspect we have a situation here similar to the Nikon D750 case, where the bulge of the V6 hot shoe may affect the constant alignment of the hot shoe contacts.  As I have seen others tried to shortens the length by sanding off the budget a little, which works though we do not recommend doing.

If you are expericing the same problem please send your V6 unit(s) back and we will replace the new hot shoe for you.  In case you may ask - if it is possible for you to replace it yourselves, the answers is - No. Since the wiring is rather complex we would only recommend replacing them for you.

    Please send your V6 to:

    2-16 Wo Liu Hang Road,
    Fo Tan,

In the meantime if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to leave a message here.

  • I seem to have the same issue with my XT1 and EF 42 setup. No matter what I try ... it fires full power. Got latest XT1 firmware as well as cactus V6 latest formware.

EF 42 fires TTL perfectly fine directly on the XT1.

Hate to return my 2 V6 but right now, they are useless for me !

Sorry to hear you are having the same problem @manascha but if you don't want to return them for the new hot shoe, you could try the aforementioned method.

  • Thanks @Antonio. I will likely sell them off ...
  • I still have problems using the i40 in E-TTL pass-through mode (I wrote in this thread before) and don't feel like sending my units to Hong Kong.

I would like to know if new V6 units all have the new hot shoe from the start, and if yes, how can I recognize a new version in the shop?

    Regards,

     Marcel

I too am not able to use the V6 and my Nissin i40 in TTL Pass Through mode with my X-T1. I have 4 V6's and would love to exchange just one for one with a new hot shoe. I have tried everything but I am only able to fire it Manually while connected to the V6.
  • Hi @marcel ; Good to hear from you.

At the moment, none of our dealers have V6 with the new hot shoe so won't spot them in person.

If you could spare 2 weeks without using one of your V6 then send it back and we will replace it for you. The replacement process is finished in a day so we usually ship the unit back the day after first receiving your package. We use E-Express from our post office and there are daily flights so delivery is pretty quick.

Let me know what other concerns you may have.  Thank you!
