Uneven flash exposure with Canon EOS 30D, Cactus V6 II, and Cactus RF60 in HSS mode

I'm having problems getting the V6 II and RF60 to sync properly in HSS mode with the EOS 30D. Everything works fine below the sync speed, but once I go to HSS mode, I get an uneven exposure with a bright band at the bottom of the image. The top of the image is illuminated some by the flash (the same exposure in ambient light is completely dark), but certainly not evenly.

The V6 II correctly autodetects the Canon camera system, and the problem occurs both in autodetect and manually configured mode. I've set the flash system to manual on the V6 II transmitter, but I assume that's only relevant when the V6 II is used in RX mode?

The V6 II is running firmware 1.1.003, and the RF60 runs firmware 202. Sync mode is set to normal HSS, delay is off. On the RF60, Au HSS is On, and delay is 0 ms.

The attached image illustrates the problem.

  • What happens if you set the flash system to "Canon"?

The flash system choice is not only relevant for Rx mode, it also affects the TTL pass-through behaviour and I assume that it also affects HSS timing.
  • Maybe it's related to specific camera model. It has the same problem on the Canon 50D, but without any problem on 5D mark 3.

Our engineering team is investigating the issue for solution.

I'll keep you posted. Thank you.

I assume that [the flash system choice] also affects HSS timing.
I think that would make more sense if the remote unit was also a Canon, and not a Cactus flash. If it really made a difference, I'd expect to find Cactus as a flash system option?

Either way, thanks for the suggestion, Class A, but it makes no difference.

Thanks for the feedback. The AF assist light is still my primary must-have feature from the V6 II, so even without functional HSS it's still a very useful improvement to an already great product. I'll look forward to future updates though. Thanks!
  • The problem has been solved. The fix will be included in the next firmware update.

    Cheers!
