Low output from SB-600, SB-28 blitzed

I just got a set of V6's yesterday. I was trying out a pair tonight (Nikon Df, SB-28, then SB-600). The SB-28 LCD panel went blank after I tried to use it with a V6. When I could finagle it to display again, the SB-28 was in repeat flash mode, and I couldn't get it into any other mode.

I then tried another unit with an SB-600. After much bashing around I finally got the Tx to control output on the Rx w/ the SB-600.  However, the SB-600 puts out FAR less light when fired by the V6 then it will at the same power & zoom settings when mounted on camera. Also, when I tried the SB-600 on a second V6 Rx, the light output was different.

Unless someone can tell me how to get this stuff to work with some kind of consistency, I'm just going to sent the 4 V6s I have back. They certainly don't seem to be either safe for my flashes, nor consistent with the instruction manuals.

Is there anyone here who can explain? Does Cactus have any kind of technical support? I am very frustrated! I really liked that old SB-28 that looks to be junked by this whole fiasco. Thanks to anyone who can help!

  • Problem resolved:  got a return authorization and shipped this junk back. Next time I'll know better then to buy something that the manufacturer doesn't support. Expensive lesson, though: $35 shipping + 1 dead SB-28. Cactus sucks!

  • Hello @brk

Sorry we didn't reply your message as it was a public holiday on July 1 and we do not operate on the weekends.
    1. Did you choose the corresponding flash profile for your SB-600 and SB-28?
    2. Did you set your flash units to TTL mode?

What happened on your SB-28 looked absurd.

In any case we are sorry for the bad experience. But with the correct gear setups all your Nikon devices are compatible and can be used for remote flash power control and flash triggering.

    Thank you.

To help us better help you, always state the exact firmware version installed on your Cactus device(s), such as: "1.1.013", "FUJ.1.002", "NIK.A.001", "v.103".

For the time being, Cactus V6 (MK1) running on firmware version 2.1.001 can be triggered by a V6 II (MK2) running on Multi-brand HSS firmware (e.g. 1.1.013) but not by X-TTL firmware versions:  PEN.A.001 NIK.A.001 OLY.A.001.  No schedule has been released yet for an "A" version firmware on the V6 (MK1).

Cactus RF60X / RF60 Firmware versions A04 and A03 currently ONLY works with PEN.A.001 NIK.A.001 and OLY.A.001.  Other "A" version of X-TTL firmware will be released soon. For both Multi-brand HSS and X-TTL firmware versions (FUJ, SIG, SON), install firmware version 103 / 205 on your RF60X / RF60.
