Mixing old and new Sony

I have an A7r which would need the S version, and I have older Sony flashes (58) which are non MI, so I would need the non S version for those. Do the non S versions of the V6II contain a profile for the older Sony flashes or is that in the S version only?

  • My personal advice.
If all your flashes are SONY, go for all V6IIS units and use the SONY ADP-MAA Shoe adapter (From Auto-Lock to Multi Interface)
On that way you are reducing the risk of incompatibility.
It is possible that the V6II are not going to recognize the TTL of your SONY flashes.
I have tried successfully on the other way: using a camera with the AL hot shoe with the ADP-AMA Shoe adapter (From Mi to AL).

The V6IIS only have HVL-F43M, HVL-F58AM and HVL-F60M and the "Auto" profiles. But you can use the Cactus Profile Editor to create any new profile.
  • Update, the profiles for SONY flashes are only on the V6IIS.
  • I have a number of strobes that I would like to control and if possible I'm trying to avoid buying adaptors for them all.

I haven't bought my Cactus units yet because I want to be sure I'm buying the right variations, so I can't test the Cactus Profile Editor. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to add the HVL-58AM profile through the Editor to a non "S" Cactus?

    Thanks

  • I do not think so. Because the communication protocol is different. I guess that the only way to use a SONY flash, AL or Mi hot shoe, on a V6II is via a center pin sync adapter. Of course you are going to loose any possibility to remote control the power or the zoom head via the V6IIS.
My advice is, buy one V6IIS for your camera and another one V6IIS for each one of your SONY flashes.
If you have any other flashes from other brands you can buy the V6II for each one.
Both the V6IIS and the V6II can trigger the studio lights (Strobes, Monolights) via the proper sync cable. But you cannot remotely adjust the power of those.

    That's correct. Thanks @lansa301.

If you use a Sony camera or flash, get the Cactus V6 IIs.

For devices with the Minolta shoe, just use the Sony Adapters and you will be able to use them as if they all have MI shoe.

  • BTW since you are getting a trigger for your Sony, make sure you get the V6 IIs, and not the V6 II.
