V6 II won't work with Nikon D5500 in Powersync

Hi to all !

This is my setup

Nikon D5500 with latest firmware   ( V 1.01)
V6 II with latest firmware ( V 1.1.005)
RF60 with latest firmware ( V 2.04)

What's the issue ?
1. Autodetect by V6 II don't recognize  it is a Nikon ( camerasymbol stays empty with no letter), so i did it myself via the manual mode en put the camera-system to Nikon
2. Set manual the sync mode to powersync.
3. Al the other settings for communication on V6 II and RF60 are ok because the zoom and flashpower can be controlled remotely.

Result : I can only work in " normal"  mode i.e. maximum on sync speed , not faster .

When i do the setup with the camera of my son ( Canon  750D ) everything works flawless

Question : What do i wrong or can the D5500 not work with the V6 II in powersync and/or HSS mode  ?

  • Perhaps you did not half press your Nikon's camera shutter button as you switch on the V6 II to TX mode? You just keep the camera active when the V6 II is auto detecting.

Your Canon worked simply because the camera was still active.

Also check if the V6 II is securely mounted on camera's hot shoe.

    See if that helps.

To help us better help you, always state the exact firmware version installed on your Cactus device(s), such as: "1.1.013", "FUJ.1.002", "v.103".

For the time being, Cactus V6 (MK1) running on firmware version 2.1.001 can be triggered by a V6 II (MK2) running on Multi-brand HSS firmware (e.g. 1.1.013) and not by X-TTL firmware versions: PEN.A.001 and OLY.A.001.  No schedule has been released yet.

Cactus RF60X / RF60 Firmware versions A01 and A02 currently ONLY works with PEN.A.001 and OLY.A.001.  Other "A" version of X-TTL firmware will be released soon. For both Multi-brand HSS and X-TTL firmware versions (FUJ, SIG, SON), install firmware version 103 / 205 on your RF60X / RF60.

Cactus RF60 is now an off-camera TTL flash with firmware version 205 or later!

Metz M400 (for Fujifilm) is now supported on the Cactus V6 II (HSS and TTL).

  • Thanks for the reply Antonio
I did firmly press the shutter halfway in , several times,   and wait until de camera icon comes on the V6 II screen but always without a ' n ' in the symbool.
When i do the same with the Canon i have directly within 2 sec the icon on the display .
Why the V6 II still not work when i do everything manual is still a question for me
Any More ideas for a solution would be welcome !
    Thanks.
  • Have you got a "special" version of the D5500 that allows for above x sync flash triggering? Nikon categorizes it as an "entry level" DSLR and "Auto FP High Speed Sync" is not supported.

    Hot shoe alignment?

Try mounting the V6 II at slightly different positions?
    - all the way in
    - slightly backward
    - further backward

When half-pressing the shutter button, you may try doing a double-click, or even triple-click, of the shutter button while the V6 II is auto-detecting. It would definitely keep the camera active.

    Thanks for chiming in @C88.
Even if @ZonaS has a special version of the Nikon D5500, it should still registered as a Nikon camera? Hmm...

That was a good tip but sadly not a solution for me after all.
It was not back/forwards that brings the 'n' in de icon but i had to  turn the V6 II head counterclockwise slightly ( 1 degree?) . Normally this is not possible ( not on my other V6) but i think that the mechanical connection between the hot shoe and the head is not so good manufactured.

Once  the autodetection recognized the Nikon camera i do still have the problem that i cannot go over the syncspeed . Moreover , the camera limit my manual shutter speed to de 1/200 sec when de V6 II is on . If a remove the V6 II, the limitation disappears.

So , for the bad mechanical connection( and maybe electrical ) i ask my store owner for warranty.
And it is pity that my D5500 cannot work in powersync ( never tried HSS)

Last question : Has somebody else  also a D5500 ( or other Nikon) with the same problem ?

For the correctness :  It is a 700D
  • Thanks @ZonaS for the updates.

So far we haven't received any other Nikon user having problem with their cameras, besides the occassional D750. So maybe it's your particular D5500, or it could be the entire batch. So let's hope another Nikon D5500 user can chime in...

That seems like a diversion from as you seem to have a NIkon family.

    Keep us posted!
