Help with V6 and Nikon D750, SB-400, SB-800

I am having a lot of trouble trying to get everything to work.

I have 4 V6 units, two Sb-400 units, 2-Sb-800 units.

I am familiar with all Cactus settings, having used them in the past.

Here is what is happening:

With Sb-400 on top of V6 on top of D750, turn everything on and V6 is in pass through mode--first one or two flashes work great--then no flash.

Turn everything off and start over--first two or three flashes are fine--then no flash.

Tried using the Nikon Sb-800 in same setup, with SB-800 selected on V6 menu.

Took a photo with flash in regular TTL--flash fired at 100% and on subsequent tries.

Tried several setting on different V6 units--Nikon (all flashes) Metz (all flashes) manual flash etc

All firmware on V6 units updated yesterday.

Any ideas?

  • Here is a follow up to my first post.

After a couple of hours working with the units I found that the V6, with SB-400 or SB-800 will work with the Nikon D750 IF you carefully adjust the position of the V6 by PULLING IT BACK just a fraction after mounting it on the camera.

The position of the contacts--never determined if it is the front or rear ones that cause the problem--sit too far forward when fully pushed into the D750 flash shoe.  By mounting it, and then just VERY SLIGHTLY pulling it back and locking it down, the system works as it should.

Looking at the D700 compared to the D750, it looks like there is more space forward on the D750 shoe before the stop on the prism top.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello buffett0462,

Indeed the new Nikon D750 has a "new" hot shoe. We are already on this and getting a "new" female hot shoe for the V6 as well.  I will you posted when we have the new shoe so we can have them replaced on yours. Where did you got your V6?

  • B&H and Adorama.

I have four of them and love them on my Fuji xt1's, but not on the d750's. Even with my "adjustments" above, could not rely on them to fire the pass through flash.
  • Hi FlashSite1234 you might have to, for now at least, put in a tiny spacer that would push back the V6 hot shoe in order for the hot shoe pins to line up. So that once it is in the right place you can push in and lock the lever at the same time for a more secured fit.

At the moment we do not have the new version of the hot shoe. Hopefully soon after new years we will have them.

So to all D750 users, we appreciate your patience during this time.

  • I just bought a D750 and have the same issue. It would be great if a 'new' hotshoe for v6 is being developed. Looking forward to it.

    Many thanks.

  • Getting close to wedding season, any word on the fix for V6 on Nikon D750?
  • I'm glad I found this thread.  I have 5 V6 units and just upgraded to a Nikon D750.  Will Cactus be informing owners when the new compatible shoe is released?  Thanks so much.
  • Hey guys, we haven't forgotten about this and will most definitely keep you all informed.

The newer hot shoe is still in the works and should come with our new product batch after Chinese New Year - that is, late February to early March.  We should hopefully  have replacment hot shoe parts available before that.  I will confirm with our project manager and get back to you later this week.

    Thank you all!

  • Hi, Antonio,

That's wonderful news.  I've been working around this by nudging the V6 into position, but it's hit-or-miss and pretty time-consuming.  Looking forward to the resolution.  Thanks for keeping us informed.

  • Hmmm is this a general problem? I have a D750 and the V6 sis pretty tight on it, sometimes the locking pin does not spring out completely, but I guess this is a defect of the device...

Have you brought it back to your dealer for inspection? They should have our product warranty coverage. In case of defect, you may ask them to fix it.

  • No fix I guess for the V6 on Nikon D750.

    Been waiting...
  • Same here, FlashSite.  Thanks for posting.  At least I know the Forum's notification function is working so I don't have to keep checking back.

    Hello everyone!

Due to the production delays at the factory, the new hot shoes will finally be available at the end of May.  Sorry for the long wait guys.

You may send them back next month for replacing the new hot shoe. We won't charge parts or service fee and you just need to pay for shipping. The cost will depend on how many units you are sending back.

For your reference, shipping to USA via registered airmail is $3 for one (1) V6 and $5 for two (2) units. It may be couple dollars more for Europe and other regions. For payment details, email us info@cactus-image.com.

Once the hot shoe parts arrive I will post an update here again.

    Thank you!

  • Where do we send them?

  • I'm assuming this still isn't avaialble? This is killing me. Well into wedding season and I'm playing with the positioning of this v6 what seems like all night.  Please hurry.

Bad news people... I am very sorry to tell you that there will be further delays.

We will have the hot shoes by mid-June.

In the meantime could you tell me how many V6 transceivers you will be sending back for replacement? That way I can know the approximate quantity required, and once I have sufficient stock I will signal y'all to return your transceivers.

Thank you again and your understanding during this time is very much appreciated.
